What Emotional Intelligence and Personal Training Have in Common

A couple of weeks ago, I attended an Athena networking event and found myself having a really interesting conversation with a lady, Bex Porter, who works as a personal trainer from her home studio.

At first glance, our work looked completely different. Bex helps people improve their fitness, movement, strength, and physical wellbeing through 1:1 and small group coaching.

Our work at Flo Right focuses on emotional intelligence training and HR support, helping people build healthier communication skills, stronger workplace relationships, emotional safety, confidence, and connection.

Different industries, different tools right? Well, not as far apart as you’d think. The more we spoke, the more we realised our work is grounded in something very similar:

Helping human beings function better.

And honestly, that’s what so much of this comes down to. Because whether we’re talking about physical health, emotional wellbeing, workplace culture, or relationships, human beings have core needs that must be met in order to truly thrive.

It instantly made me think of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, one of my favourite concepts when it comes to human behaviour.

At the bottom of the pyramid are the foundations of safety, survival, stability, health, and security.

Then we move upwards into connection, belonging, confidence, esteem, growth, and eventually self-actualisation, becoming the fullest version of ourselves.

The reality is, most people are trying to navigate life while some of those needs remain unmet.

Some people feel emotionally unsafe, while others feel disconnected. Some are overwhelmed and burnt out, while other are struggling with their confidence. Communicating what one might need may be difficult. And the hardest part of this all is that some people are surviving rather than living. You can often see the impact of that in both personal life and the workplace.

This is why emotional intelligence matters so much. Unresolved emotions and unmet needs can have a ripple effect across every area of a person’s life. Communication begins to suffer, which naturally impacts relationships. A lack of emotional safety can affect confidence, performance, and trust. Stress influences behaviour, reactions, and decision-making. Over time, these unresolved emotional pressures can take a serious toll on wellbeing, relationships, and a person’s ability to function at their best.

Likewise, movement and physical wellbeing play a huge role too.

Exercise isn’t just about appearance.

  • It helps regulate emotions.
  • It improves mood by releasing those feel-good hormones.
  • It builds resilience, confidence, energy, and mental clarity.
  • It strengthens the body and supports our ability to protect, sustain, and care for ourselves long-term.

So whilst one person may support somebody through emotional regulation and communication, and another through movement and physical strength, both are still contributing to the wellbeing of the whole person. At the core of it all, we’re helping people meet fundamental human needs.

  • Physical wellbeing impacts → emotional wellbeing.
  • Emotional wellbeing impacts → relationships.
  • Relationships impact →  confidence.
  • Confidence impacts →  performance.
  • Everything overlaps.

Neither role is about “fixing” people. It’s about helping individuals develop the awareness, habits, tools, and support systems needed to move forward in healthier ways.

But there’s also an important truth within all of this:

The individual still has to put the work in.One of the best quotes I’ve heard in this field is from Jamie Remsburg at Next Element. She said, “tools don’t work, people do,” and that is the truth!

  • No trainer can exercise for somebody else.
  • No emotional intelligence coach can instantly change behaviours overnight.
  • No HR support can create healthy workplace culture without people engaging in the process.

Growth happens when support and personal responsibility work together.

At Flo Right, a huge part of our work is helping individuals and organisations use emotions alongside clear thinking to build healthier relationships, improve communication, and transform conflict into something that no longer needs to be feared, but navigated productively.

We help create environments where people feel psychologically safe enough to communicate honestly, take ownership, express themselves healthily, and connect more effectively with others, not through fear, shame, or rigid control.

Because when people feel mentally and physically supported, everything changes. Communication improves. Tension reduces. Relationships strengthen. Confidence grows. People move from simply surviving to genuinely thriving.

And that’s what real wellbeing actually is.

  • It isn’t perfection.
  • It isn’t constantly “having it all together.”
  • It is not endlessly performing.

But creating the conditions where human beings feel safe, supported, connected, and empowered enough to become the healthiest version of themselves. And if you’re a solopreneur or part of a larger organisation, that’s got to be good for business right?!
