Your Business Isn’t Stuck—You’re Just Missing a Plan
Ever feel like your business is going in circles?
Like you’re doing all the things, but nothing’s really moving forward?
You’re not alone. Most small business owners hit this wall at some point. It’s usually not because they’re doing it wrong, but because they’re doing it without a plan.
Busy ≠ Productive
Let’s get something straight: being busy is not the same as being productive. If your to-do list is full, but your growth is flat, you’re probably reacting to problems instead of leading with purpose. And while firefighting might make you feel important, it’s no way to build a sustainable business.
So, What’s the Fix?
You don’t need a 57-tab spreadsheet or a color-coded Gantt chart (unless that’s your jam—no judgement—we LOVE a good ol’ Gantt chart)! What you need is a simple, solid, realistic plan that gives direction without overwhelming you.
Here’s where to start:
1. Get Clear on Your Vision
Ask yourself:
-
Where do I want this business to be in 12-18 months?
-
What does success actually look like for me? Be true to your-self with this. If success means a modest income with a few clients, fab. If it means having millions in the bank, a Range Rover on the drive and a yard full of horses, cool. Or, if it means having a healthy income that enables you to spend more time with your family, excellent! We all have our own views on what success looks like—none is the right type of success!
This is your North Star. Without it, you’re just chasing every shiny idea and wondering why you’re exhausted. Ever heard of Magpie syndrome? If not, look it up. Hands up, I am very prone to this, so I choose to work hard on remaining focused and following my plans!
2. Break Down the Big Picture
Once you’ve got your vision, it’s time to make it workable—without overcomplicating things.
I keep a 12–18 month vision board visible in my workspace at all times. It’s not fancy or overwhelming—it’s colour-coded and focused on:
-
Key business goals and milestones
-
Continued professional development goals
-
Personal goals
This becomes my North Star.
From there, I break it down into:
-
Quarterly plans focused on strategic progress
-
Monthly overviews where I map out each week in advance
-
Weekly schedules built around what really matters and what will move the needle
No fluff. Just intentional action aligned with where I want to go.
This isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the right things, with purpose.
3. Identify the Gaps
Are you wearing too many hats? Running out of time for the important stuff? Maybe you don’t need more time, you just need better delegation. (Hint: that’s where outsourcing can be a lifesaver—yes, I’m biased, but I’m also right.)
4. Check in Regularly
Plans aren’t carved in stone. They’re living, breathing guides. Schedule weekly or monthly check-ins—either with yourself, your team, or someone who can hold you accountable—to review, reset, and refocus.
5. Stop Waiting for ‘Perfect’
A good-enough plan you follow is better than a perfect one you never start. Progress happens in the doing. Trust yourself and tweak as you go should you need to. You also don’t need to be regimented and stick to the plan, particualrly when things aren’t working out. Remain flexible and trust you gut.
So what now?
If your business feels stuck, it’s probably not broken. You just need a map. Something to guide your energy, your decisions, and your next steps.
