Congratulations on becoming an employer!
Congratulations on becoming an employer!
An employment contract is a good place to start. In fact, if you don’t issue a contract within 2 months of employing your new recruit you are in breach of employment law and could face serious consequences.
It’s no good just relying on an email or conversation of any sort where terms of employment have been discussed. You MUST have a written contract of employment in place. Besides, what sort of message are you giving out if you don’t?
Here are some fundamental pieces of information you’ll need to include in the main body of your agreement:
🗒️ Your name as employer & employee’s full name
📅 The start date of employment
🗒️ Job description
🏢 Place or various locations of work
✉️ Notice period requirements
💸 Pay and intervals of payment
🕰️ Normal working hours and any variables relating to them
🏖️ Holiday entitlement & any other benefits
📄 Details of any probationary period
Getting it right from the start can save you a whole heap of hassle in the long run and help you sleep comfortably at night!
If in doubt, just ask!
What do you find most daunting about employment contracts?
